Financial anxiety and its related health and psychological effects is crushing more people than all diseases combined. When you consider that 78% of people are living paycheck to paycheck, that means most people are suffering at an alarming rate…and it’s only getting worse. And the conventional and entrenched methods of delivering financial advice have failed to deliver what is desperately needed: a pathway to lasting financial transformation.

In my 27 years of working with thousands of employees, I’ve seen the devastating effects that money stress has on not only the employee’s well-being, but on the company’s bottom line as well.

Everyone is affected by stress. While some stress can be manageable, too much stress can wear away at a person’s mental and physical health.

Financial stress negatively impacts an employee’s state of being, lowering their productivity and engagement. According to PwC’s Employee Financial Wellness Survey, money is the top cause of stress for employees, leading to issues such as sleeping disorders, anxiety and depression. Poor physical and mental health can also lead to absenteeism, lack of concentration and poor performance in the workplace.

Financial stress is a concern for employees at all income levels: Even among employees with an annual household income of $100,000 or more, 52% report feeling stressed by finances.

As a leader in your organization, here’s some important statistics that you should be aware of:

  • Employees burdened by money matters are nine times more likely to have troubled relationships with coworkers and are twice as likely to be searching for a new job. This could pose a myriad of issues, from trouble retaining employees to increased H.R. workload and training costs
  • The 2021 Wellness Barometer Survey found that 65% of employees are stressed about their finances, costing employers across the country a total of $4.7 billion per week in lost productivity.
  • Over the course of a year, a full-time employee may spend more than 156 hours (or 19.5 days) distracted from work because of personal money matters.
  • Based on the average American hourly wage, you could effectively be paying financially stressed employees $3,922 or more each year to fret about money on the job
  • 40% of employees plan to postpone retirement because of their financial situation. This can have an impact on your bottom line by way of wages, health-care costs and workers compensation.
  • Research shows, even a one-year delay in retirement could result in an incremental annual workforce costs of about 1.0%–1.5% for an entire workforce, and an incremental cost of over $50,000 for an individual whose retirement is delayed.
  • 60% of employees say they are more likely to stay with an employer that offers a program designed to help them manage their personal financial life

Additionally, most employees want support and guidance from their employers on personal finances, not only for retirement and financial education, but also financial planning, investing and day-to-day money management. Financial resources employees want from employers include:

  • Financial education (82%);
  • Tools for investing (82%);
  • Access to a financial professional (78%); and
  • Unbiased money resources (70%).
